About the author:

Garry Maher is a former senior police officer, academic and corporate trainer with wide experience as an operational investigator, criminal adjudicator, and police educator. During his career he has been involved in the research, design, development, delivery and evaluation of numerous recruit, investigator and middle-management training programs for both the public and private sector. 

Following his appointment as Associate Director and Visiting Scholar of the Centre for Professional and Vocational Education, University of Canberra, Garry mentored numerous police, military and other government educators and human resources personnel in the development of their respective internal investigation and professional development training programs. He has been instrumental in developing nationally accredited investigation and security training programs in accordance with the vocational and education training agenda of the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) - now the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST).

Garry has undertaken further studies and research in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe, United States, and Canada in adult learning and teaching, incident investigation, fraud detection and investigation, cultural diversity, cognitive interview techniques and case management.

Throughout his career as a police officer, academic, and principal of a corporate training organisation Garry has been directly involved in the professional development of 8000+ government and private sector investigators and people in similar or supportive roles.

In recognition of his knowledge and experience, and in particular his work in the skills development of those in the investigation profession, Garry was awarded associate membership of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), Washington DC, USA. More recently, Garry received a commendation from the Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) for his work in developing specialist-training programs for compliance and enforcement officers employed in government agencies.

Garry is currently a consultant training needs analyst, guest speaker, and adviser to a number of international human resource and professional development organisations and tertiary training institutions.
